Physician Associate Updates on Regulation and the Professional Role in Aotearoa New Zealand

We will be posting updates in the “Latest news and Updates” section of our website’s home page during the upcoming weeks that contain accurate and relevant information that the NZPAS asks you to consider as you answer the MCNZ consultation on the ongoing process of regulation. It is important to understand that the NZPAS has been partially involved in the process as have many others. Unfortunately, some important practical information about the roll was excluded and this evidence-based information is important to the consultation. This is the first of several MCNZ consultations and we anticipate updates on these so that we educate and appropriately support a profession held in high esteem internationally. We appreciate being included in the process and support a fair regulatory framework that supports public safety while offering practical support for the professional role. Physician Associates need to continue to serve the numerous clinics and healthcare systems currently struggling in New Zealand.

The UK Leng review/opinion is mentioned in the MCNZ consultation in regard the professional title: this is a misleading review and lacks evidence-with important lessons learned from delayed UK regulation of medical associate professionals (Physician and Anesthesia Associates)

Please consider reading this before considering some of the Leng review recommendations. See UMAPS for more information. The GMC has done excellent work on the regulatory framework for the Physician Associate profession.
