What New Zealand GPs are saying about PAs?
“Physician Associates could play a vital role in addressing healthcare disparities by expanding access to quality medical services, particularly in underserved communities where healthcare workforce shortages are prevalent.”
Dr. Praveen Thadagiri, Living Waters Medical Solutions
“I find the level of knowledge and their ability to apply this appropriately to be exceptionally good and at times I am happy to say that their knowledge of some conditions has surpassed my own.”
Dr. Alan Wright, Hastings Health Centre
“Regulation of the PA profession will only further augment their positive and transformative contribution towards reducing healthcare gaps in Aotearoa and providing the much-needed care that our communities need.”
Dr. Victor Kovarski, Gore Health
“The success of PAs providing medical care in Aotearoa is not an unknown, future hope, nor a hypothetical – . His presence is a force-multiplier, allowing us to provide care to a greater number of patients than we could otherwise/before…. Employing PAs has not been a compromise for us: It has enriched the collaboration among providers here.”
Dr. Martijn Haitsma, Tara Road Medical Centre
“Our PA works here under a well-defined scope of practice and within that scope, she is able to function very efficiently and autonomously. For all intents and purposes, she basically fulfills the role and responsibilities of a GP on the roster, albeit working alongside a supervising doctor. Her skill level is very high and therefore the nature of this supervision over her is not onerous.”
Dr. Richard Jamieson, Hastings Health Centre
“I have the highest regard for their training, skills, professionalism, flexibility, and willingness to learn and adapt to any given situation that proves necessary with the utmost regard for putting their patients first.”
Dr. Peter DeWolfe
Physician Associates provide a unique service within the multidisciplinary team, we have worked with them in primary care for over 10 years and know the value add of having an associate who can assist delivery of care to patients within the team.
We have a workforce crisis, we see the impacts every day of long waiting times to see our teams, in many areas the capacity to care is just not there.
Physician Associates, like the diverse skill sets of other health professionals that desperatly need support PAs can and do add capacity to general practice teams and work collaboratively providing safe effective care for patients.
It’s been a long time coming and congratulations is due to the PA leaders in New Zealand whose professionalism and persistence has contributed to this significant step.
From Senior GP / Primary Care Leader (Team-Based Care Letter)
On the effectiveness of allied health workers:
“Studies show that allied health workers can safely and effectively address up to 75% of the issues encountered by GPs, often with identical or better outcomes. Expanding their role will help alleviate the burden on overworked and underpaid GPs.”
On the safety and effectiveness of Physician Associates:
“Claims that Physician Associates and other allied workers are unsafe are unsubstantiated. International evidence shows that, compared to doctors, allied health workers like PAs provide efficient, safe, and effective care, sometimes even with better clinical outcomes.”
On the disruptive role of Physician Associates:
“Physician Associates are part of a disruptive innovation in healthcare. Similar to the acceptance of Nurse Practitioners, the addition of PAs will eventually lead to a more effective, efficient, and accessible primary care system, despite initial resistance from some medical unions.”
Kiwi, Doctor, Health Systems Academic with International Perspective
“In several other countries, PAs have been successfully incorporated into the healthcare system. Their presence allows us to significantly increase ease of access for patients to reliable healthcare, reducing wait times and therefore addressing health needs earlier. In turn this reduces the cost burden caused by delayed diagnosis and presentation to secondary care. In particular in currently underserved regions of the country they would have the potential to have a significant impact on the ability of the health service to provide equitable access to quality healthcare for all.”
Vocationally trained GP
I support growth, training, and the recognition of regulated physician associates within the healthcare system of New Zealand. It is long overdue. I have worked with over 20 PAs in my career and all have been excellent, highly trained and skilled professionals. Physician associates have rigorous training like doctors and they are highly skilled healthcare professionals who have all studied completed post graduate training. In my mind, this is comparable to New Zealand doctors when they become a resident doctor and then after a few years working with supervision, they have the medical knowledge and diagnostic skills to autonomously work alongside doctors.

Addressing GP Shortages:
“Bridges the gap with the GP shortage we have in NZ.”
Improved Patient Care and Access:
“We are able to provide far better access to medical treatment for our own patients and patients in the wider community that are unable to book an appointment with their provider in a timely manner. This ensures a better outcome for patients, physically, emotionally, and mentally, also potentially lowering the long term/ongoing costs of a delayed diagnosis/treatment.”
“Super efficient in urgent care space, helpful to treat and assist in emergencies, and great knowledge.”
Team Collaboration and Workplace Impact:
“An amazing addition to the whole MDT (multidisciplinary team).”
“Having PAs in the workplace makes such an impact on the workload at our clinic. They are always here to help when we have any urgent walk-in patients.”
“Every PA I have worked with has made our workplace less stressful. They are always there to help our nurses and GPs, and they are all extremely popular with our patients and genuinely make the workplace a happier place.”
Feedback from our patients has been VERY POSITIVE!”
“Awesome to have someone for the workload to be shared with—fits in well with the team.”
Professionalism and Competence:
“A very professional workforce with high standards and professional knowledge. On our walk-in clinic, they provide a great service, safe, professional, well supported by other staff and patients alike.”
Workload Reduction and Efficiency:
“I can only comment on the PA working with us—she is excellent—high-quality skills and communication—greatly helps reduce workload and prescribing rights are really essential for her to function to her full potential in the practice and save us time/reduce workload.”
The Benefits of Hiring a PA
Physician Associates are qualified medical practitioners who offer flexibility and benefit amongst healthcare teams. The PA profession is rapidly expanding globally and ranks high on the healthcare professions’ demand scale.
Physician Associates are a new scope of practice and do not replace doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners or other health professionals or specialists. They complete the team.
- Doctors do not need to be on-site while PAs are seeing patients.
- Collaboration or supervision can occur by electronic or by phone contact when necessary.
- Their scope of practice varies depending on where they practice and the scope of their supervising doctor(s).

Filling the Gap in GP Shortages
The New Zealand Physician Associate Society (NZPAS) was incorporated in 2014 in order to represent and promote physician associates (PAs) employed within New Zealand. The Society’s primary objective is to promote the Physician Associate profession in New Zealand and to provide quality medical care to the people of New Zealand by supporting dedicated, experienced PAs in their work.
